Duran Duran Duran - Very Pleasure

Formed in 1999 and based in Philadelphia, Duran Duran Duran is the solo breakcore project of Ed Flis. Very Pleasure was his first album under this name, but he's been making electronic music since as early as 1995 and has been active in various hardcore/punk bands.

This is one of the finest and most intense breakcore/noise albums I've ever heard. Darkness and perversion permeate every corner of this genius' artistic output, but it never gets old. He's just very good at what he does.

Com.A - Shot of Love

 2002; 14 tracks Com.A is a Age Yoshida, a Japanese electronic/idm/glitch musician who began releasing tracks on compilations and remixes in 1998. Shot of Love is his third full-length out of four, along with several other EPs and singles.

"To me Com.A is one of the most interesting and advanced artists in current electronic music. His tracks are very well produced and complex and they reach an incredible intensity. In most cases Com.A is combining lots of different kinds of sounds and samples with phat and/or abstract beats that can be really catchy and hiphop-esque or completely weird and ultra cut-up as well. Other tunes surprise with much straighter beats and beautiful 8bit-style electro melodies or experimental ambiences... I don't want to downgrade this by categorizing it, but all in all I would call it some kind of strange and funky alien tech breakstep hop that should be recommended to every fan of sophisticated electronica like (for example) Eight Frozen Modules."

As I am not exactly a fan of sophisticated electronica (not because I don't want to be, I'm just not), that review seems to echo my own thoughts regarding Shot of Love. It is fast and furious but not without structure. A little "tough on the neurons," at times, but worth a listen.

Lucy - Wordplay for Working Bees

This is the debut full-length album of Luca Mortellaro, a very talented young artist of electronic and techno music. His first EP, Open House, was released in 2007, and he has since been featured on numerous mixes and a prominent member of the underground techno scene.

Wordplay for Working Bees is a cerebral album, to be sure, but it is penetrating in its darkness. I've never called the genre of "techno" a favorite, but this particular brand of techno, sometimes edging on idm, is beautiful. This is definitely one of my favorite new albums of 2011, and I'm excited to see what else Lucy creates.

"The album often swings wildly from gorgeous interludes to foreboding atmospheres, where low frequencies bud and spore spontaneously. The beats are rarely predictable, sometimes not even danceable... That's not to say that Wordplay is all downcast weather and ruminative rumblings: The album's pumping midsection can be just as suffocating as it is warmly embracing, particularly the hissing field of locusts that surrounds the floating breakbeat in 'Bein' or the aural cement mixer that grounds 'Lav.'

Wordplay's defining feature is its immense and overwhelming sound design. Texture dominates over structure and rhythm. While definitely not an ambient album, it's easy enough to get lost in what's happening in or around the beats. It's something that anyone who loves electronic music, sound and sound manipulation, can fall in love with; when those microscopic fireworks burst blazing out of the percussion on 'Gas,' no one's going to care about time signatures or genre conventions. As techno continues to suffer through a bipolar identity crisis, fractured down the middle between minimal and, well, not minimal, it's producers like Lucy that prove just how far beyond those arbitrary boundaries the medium can be extended."

Sweet Trip

This band needs much more recognition and support... They really are one of a kind and amazingly great. Sweet Trip is without a doubt one of my favorite experimental/dream-pop/electronic groups ever. More info here.

Velocity : Design : Comfort


2003; 12 tracks

So freaking gorgeous. Jazz. Electronic. Shoegaze. Every fucking thing is in this album. It has also been described as.. IDM? I believe that stands for "intelligent dance music." This CD is full of good rhythm and soft harmonies, such as in the song "To All the Dancers of the World, A Round Form of Fancy." I think that's my favorite track off of this album.

You Will Never Know Why

This is absolutely my favorite Sweet Trip album, and possibly my favorite shoegaze/indie album in the entire universe. It is very different from V : D : C, but by no means in a bad way. It is softer and introduces newer "folk" elements, such as acoustic guitars, that aren't present very often in their previous stuff. I really, really love the song Milk. It is one of the most powerful and beautiful songs I have heard in a long while. If you're wondering which ST album to get, please please get this one. You will not regret it.
