ルナパーク・アンサンブル (Luna Park Ensemble) - Mushi Kui Mandala
"Uber-whimsical art rock screwiness from the endlessly fascinating 80's Japanese undeground. This CD compiles material from their two very rare LP releases and presents a group with a pronounced affection for After Dinner-like delicate pop discombobulation."
Here we have a creative ensemble of sounds from various styles - free-form psychedelic, dazzling and fantastical pop-inspired jazz. It is ingenious, it is fun, it is great.

Crust - Crusty Love
This is a terrifying, nigh unbearable, combination of tracks. It makes my spine crawl just to think about it. Crust was a Texas-based noise rock band from the '80s and '90s signed onto the Trance Syndicate records. Crusty Love is their second full-length album.
They go over the edge, Crust does, with no limits in sight. Their sound varies slightly from track to track, but their initial heaviness will stay with you, and haunt you. My personal least favorite track, although I recognize it's brilliance, is "Country Lesson." Oh yeah, there is also "How About You," which takes the listener on the journey of an innocent young man picked up on the side of the road by a psychopath who gets off on the idea of having sex with hermaphrodites. That particular narrative doesn't seem to end well, as the song draws to a close before we can find out what happens to the young kid... hmm. I actually really love the first two tracks a lot, and you probably will too if you're willing to take a risk.
"Unhinged and packed with humour, Crust played a very special brand of noise rock, namely: AAAAHHH NOISE ROCK. If the bludgeon of Cherubs met the off-the-wall attitude of Killdozer, the result would be this very album, albeit with some apt samples and a vague predisposition towards 90’s industrial included."

Ovens - Ovens
"Weezer crossed with The Fucking Champs, playing minute long, hook-laden pop rock songs about smoking PCP and falling down.
There are 44 tracks, so no track-listing for you, but here are some highlights: 'Puke When I'm Sad,' 'We Know We Suck,' 'Braden's Bleeding Head' and of course: 'PCP Song.'"
This is an AMAZING album! It is full of incredible moments, fun and beautiful and catchy. Even though most of the songs are a little too short to get attached to, they are well worth their while. I'm so so so glad I found this.

Teenage Larvae - Songs For Pigs

According to Last.fm, Teenage Larvae is a "side project of Kevin Rutmanis (Cows, Melvins) with David B. Livingston (God Bullies) and 'anyone else we can exploit or lure into the studio'. That includes Shannon Selberg & Thor Eisentrager (both also from Cows)."
Songs for Pigs, while it is totally unclassifiable, is fantastic. Give it a listen or three, disappointment is not an option.

Pond - Pond
"Pond is remembered by people who don't really know what they're talking about as a 'grunge' band, but I wouldn't call them that. Yeah, they rose to prominence in the NW in the early-to-mid 90's, and it's easy to slap that label on them to quickly reference their involvement in that scene, but "grunge" has dumbed-down connotations that I would never attach to Pond. Their music, even though it was never short on gristly, fuzzed-out tones, was deceptively intricate and fully reliant on melody over all else. Trying to compare the resulting sound to any other band is pointless, and in this case, that's a high compliment.
Pond was a three-piece band that sounded like a four-piece, thanks both to Charlie Campbell's dexterous fingers on the guitar, and Chris Brady's penchant for playing weird-ass semi-chords on his bass. (He would also use a bow sometimes.) And, of course, Dave Triebwasser pummeled the drums. That guy was the perfect drummer for this group. They all sound huge, but like I said, it's the precision that made it work. There were plenty of bands who tried to play loud, melodic rock, but Pond was just really fucking good at it.
The fact that Campbell and Brady's voices sound similar to the untrained ear made the whole thing even more interesting. Their harmonies were dead-on, and instead of their being a slight disconnect when one or the other took over the lead vocals (I always just assumed they sang the songs they wrote, and the vocal duties usually ended up being split down the middle - also cool) - like, say, on a Sebadoh record - you were never left with any sense that things had shifted. Tough to do, and a real testament to how well Campbell and Brady worked together.
So, yes, this is their debut, and though I bet the band considers this their finding-their-sound LP, it's full-blown awesomeness. (Quick aside - I went to see Pond in 1997, and someone yelled out 'Agatha' - one of the singles from this record - and Brady made a comment about how they're "not that band anymore" and they did not play the song. Hence my assumption that they disowned this record at some point.) Trying to explain what Pond sounds like is difficult, so describing the exact merits of these songs is a little tough. They're heavy in a way, but also the sort of songs that I used to sing along to at the top of my lungs. I still can. They're catchy. And the lyrics are smart."
That was taken from here, but I thought it was really great. I agree with that author - Pond is nothing like Nirvana, or Alice in Chains... it is on a completely new level, and the lyrics ARE smart! I will be listening to this album for a few more days, medititating on the full-blown awesomeness of Pond. Every time is a new experience.

Deadboy & the Elephantmen - If This is Hell Then I'm Lucky Demo
This is NOT the album version, but I personally think it is even better. This is the first release by Dax Riggs' project Deadboy & the Elephantmen and it is truly astounding. I'll admit it took me a few listens to catch on, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. That almost never happens. "Otherworldly Dreamer" is my favorite track atm. It is a masterful, powerful album of slow, plodding melodies reminiscient of Lungish, at times.

Six Organs of Admittance - School of the Flower

Six Organs of Admittance is an experimental folk band, founded by Ben Chasny, in 1988/northern California. This album is extremely delicate and all the while intense. There are some really nice acoustic parts in this album. Most notable might be the ending track, "Lisboa," which is a very beautiful guitar lullaby. As if that weren't enough, there are also obvious drone/noise influences in this album, ranging from Sunn O))) to Fushitsusha.
"School of the Flower is one of those rare, understated but compulsive collections you'll want to listen to on repeat until it's time to blow out the incense, dump the wine in the sink, and step fuzzy-headed into the imperfect sunlight of the prosaic, but suddenly potentially transcendent world."

Pinkshinyultrablast - Happy Songs for Happy Zombies EP
2009; 4 tracks
Pinkshinyultrablast is a Russian shoegaze/rock band whose style is very dreamy and shoegazey. It's also pretty noisey, but that's because this is a very fuzzy and buzzy little EP. Their sound is comparable to artists such as My Bloody Valentine and early Slowdive, but Pinkshinyultrablast's sound is a bit more vibrant. Happy Songs for Happy Zombies is very, very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to more releases from Pinkshinyultrablast in the future.

The Residents - Animal Lover
Who DOESN'T love The Residents? I have never met someone who hasn't, unless they just haven't heard them before. Animal Lover is a gorgeous album. According to Wikipedia, this album "portrays human life through the eyes of different animals." This album mixes the absurd with the elegance of civilized life, or shall I say the monotony?
Sparks - Propaganda
Sparks is an American glam/pop-rock band, formed in 1970 by brothers Ron and Russel Mael. I love this album so so much, as it reminds me of Queen but is actually much better. The brothers are very charismatic musicians/performers and if you've ever seen a youtube video or something of them performing their music, it is quite awesome. Anyways, this is my favorite Sparks album, and I really love the song "Something for the Girl with Everything."

MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS
MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS is an all-girl Japanese band. They create quite a variety of music - shoegaze, post-punk, alt rock, and even some psych. Here is their discography: two albums, one EP, and one single. I have enjoyed each and every one of them thoroughly and love them all equally.
This 3 track debut EP features very fast-paced, rhythmic and abrasive music. Above the city-like structured chaos of the loud guitars and drums, 宮本菜津子's voice soars with a rebellious yet elegant sound. This EP is a great MOTFD starter listen.
This album features the three tracks from Kirametal but with a harsher sound. There are also other great tracks on this album. I love love love this, it's so full of life, with it's harsh moments, soft vocals and loud vocals and gorgeous riffs and city soundscapes.

Why?
I've been listening to Why? for about 2 years now, off and on, and they are still as wonderful as they were the first time. I've looked into many of their "similar artists" on Last.fm and nothing has ever come close to comparing with them :'). Why? is an Oakland based trio that has been making music for about 10 years. Their work is hard to describe, as it is so diverse and experimental and gorgeous. I'd say it's mostly indie hip-hop, with some rap and even some folk elements (especially in their newest album, "Eskimo Snow"). I have heard their entire discography about 20 times and I haven't gotten sick of it ONCE. I love their album Oaklandazulasylum the most by far. More info here. Enjoooyyy.
This is my favorite Why? album. It took me a while to get into it because most of the songs are pretty short and fragmented and... it's just a trip to listen to the whole thing beginning to end. I always end up being in some dreary, dreamy state listening to this album - it gives me really funny dreams! My favorite tracks are Dream on Cortelyou, Our Neighbor's Daughter, and A Little Titanic. This is a perfect album, but it might not be for everyone... I suggest lisetning the shit out of it and forcing yourself to like it. I promise you will.
This album is extremely complex and layered and rich in texture/lyrical content. My favorite tracks are Yo Yo Bye Bye, Gemini (Birthday Song), and Rubber Traits. It is a difficult album to get into, but I'd consider it their most mature work of all. I love it.
I really like this EP, especially the song 500 Fingernails. I think it shows a nice progression from their previous two albums. It seems like it introduces you to Why?'s new sound on Alopecia.
This is a cool album, but I think it is overhyped. As a whole, it's not amazing. I really love the songs "Simeon's Dilemma" and "Torpedo or Crohn's" like.. with all of my fucking heart. I also love the lyrics to the first 5 songs. Alopecia features more rapping, which turns some people off but whatever. Why? is awesome -heart-

This is a nice album, it features more sentimental lyrics and softer music... I don't know how to describe it. Against Me is an amazing song :3 Eskimo is not bad, but it's not my favorite Why? album.
