let love flower

hello.

i am forever asking the same questions of myself and of the world.

not forever, though.

theoretically i will some day be a person who has gained a certain amount of wisdom from a lifetime full of experiences and,

at that point,

will i still have the same questions to ask?

will i still be a cup full of cracks?

will i stop looking both into future and past, but rather toward something for which i as yet have no words?

asking questions in question of questions.

Prazision (1993)

post-rock.

i am actually listening to post-rock again. it has been years! to be quite honest, i am nearly at a point where i am so unused to long and quiet parts in songs by bands that when they happen i feel slightly confused for a second before i realize what's happening.

this is the very first album by Labradford, a Virginia-based all-bass trio active throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

here you will find music that is quiet, meditative and spacey with some really warm moments.

"Soft Return" (@ 3:28), in all its soft sweetness, is now in the running for one of my new favorite songs of all time (which changes often), followed incredibly closely by the Bark Psychosis-esque slinkiness "C of People" (@ 4:58).

which reminds me,

my favorite genre of music in the past 2 or 3 years would belong to a genre called something like "Driving Alone at Night while Stars and Melting City Lights Illuminate Dirty Backstreets and Distant Suburban Trees."

there's something so fascinating about being alone in such a self-indulgently introspective mood, somewhere as isolated yet freeing as within your own car on an empty highway at night.

American Football, Mogwai, Slint, Bark Psychosis, Talk Talk, Suicide, Rothko.

In The Pulse of an Artery (2001)
~sadly no track available~

Wish for a World Without Hurt with Blk. Bear (2003)
Track 4, "Dropped From Clouds"

Not Gone. Not Forgotten. (2001) live album
Track 12, "Time Out"

Rothko was a UK-based post-rock/minimalist/field recording/noise artist, primarily (if not exclusively) instrumental, and active during the end of the 1990s and throughout the first decade of the 2000s.

i listen to albums like these by Rothko because of the same reason that i listen to a lot of music i enjoy - without words, the mind can truly be free.

music, when not overlaid with words or concepts that conjure pre-configured associations, naturally speaks this wordless language. when this unspoken language is given a world in which it can thrive it communicates in a very similar language to the one i have always spoken in my head (if that makes any sense).

some of my favorite music that i listen to and find to be a completely soul-drenching experience (where all senses and mental energies are focusing on what is being heard) like Debussy or Frey or Bach or Scelsi is almost exclusively wordless instrumental music (a term which does sometimes include vocals sung in a foreign or nonexistent language).

i prefer these wordless sounds because to me they convey the purest expression of music - sound. like noise. or silence. this freeform existence is the truest state of "music" because it -is- despite being heard and comprehended. it must only be heard to be identified with by any sentient being, to be felt.

// i realize i'm speaking in rather abstract terms but the subject of emotion is a highly relative one anyway - how can one's emotional response to a piece of music be exactly the same as that of another? how could two disparate beings agree on a definition of any emotion in totality? //

the way that Rothko's wordless instrumental sounds speak to me is peculiar, perhaps, because i am a wordless instrumentalist myself. i much appreciate their indeterminate repetition of bare musical ideas, which always seem to be stripped of any excess.

Forty Years to Find a Voice (2000)
"Shock of Self"

do you see what i mean now? if a band were to take away everything but the beating heart of the beast, perhaps along with some shadows of fire and emotion, it would sound something like this.

"A Search for No Answer"

and this, THIS could easily be seen as something like a Bach fugue. it is pretty much identical in form - a canon, if you will, of two crystal-clear guitar voices intersecting at precise angles, looping around each other - unmapped twists and turns of both harmony and melody. what more could you even want?

in addition, the track's title - "A Search for No Answer" - strikes me as descriptive of what composition essentially is. the search itself is what is heard or not heard, experienced or not experienced, but it always occurs within a duration of passing time. whatever answers that do exist are never experienced - the end of all is indeed silence, nothingness, absence but... not relating to sound or time.

true silence and nothingness occur when there is no longer silence or nothingness.

The For Carnation

Out of the ashes of Slint, a Louisville, Kentucky post/math rock band with a somber disposition, there arose The For Carnation. It was created by Slint's vocalist, Brian McMahan, whose melancholic and achingly cute and sexy voice (to me) pervade the glorious, sonic landscapes. Sometimes jazzy, sometimes slow and sad, sometimes upbeat and sludgy, The For Carnation plow on in unfaltering assurance. Imagine an old-fashioned train, endlessly circling around some distant planet or moon, far off in space where no eye has ever seen. It has been happening for as long as time, maybe longer, and it will continue forever, unnoticed. Listening to this band makes me feel as if I'm observing this train's movements from a distance, captivated by such fearless monotony.

I apologize for lousy album covers, and also THANK YOU to Selim for turning me on to these guys. Get the self-titled first, if you're unsure. The first track, "Emp. Man's Blues," is a portrait of perfect solitude.

Bluetile Lounge - Lowercase

1995; 5 tracks

Lowercase is astoundingly gorgeous. Mesmerizingly so. Australian post-rock group Bluetile Lounge are more slowcore than anything. Their music is sad and slow. Subtle beauty arises from the gray evenness as mist from the waves; sporadically, unexpectedly. I was reminded of Idaho, vocal-wise, and God is an Astronaut (somewhat), in terms of the post-rock-sounding music. This might just be one of the most... how do I put this... not just beautiful, but alluring albums.

Extra note: I think their band name explains the atmosphere of their music nicely. I've never been in a bluetile lounge, but if I ever was, this is the music I'd like to hear playing.

Ef - Give Me Beauty... Or Give Me Death!

2006; 6 tracks

This is the debut album of Swedish post-rock band Ef, and it is a perfect May album. Each track resonates with a shimmering energy that seems to embody the entire genre of "post-rock." Vocals are scarce, but lovely and powerful when heard (see "Hello Scotland"). I just can't find enough words to explain the beauty of Give Me Beauty... Or Give Me Death!. The best experience I had listening to this album was last year on a day that I didn't have school. My mom took me and my sister and brother to a park right on the edge of a huge forest. Me and my sister ran through the forest and found a lake that we had visited when we were younger, and we just laid out on the rock staring at the clouds for hours. Time doesn't even exist in moments like this, when the most beautiful music and the most perfect sky calmly hold you still above the world.

City streets, in late spring...
Where smoke covers everyone, and everything.

Hammock - Raising Your Voice... Trying to Stop an Echo

2006; 18 tracks

This is an utterly gorgeous and perfect album. Hammock create beautiful, flowing post-rock ambience. 18 songs and not one moment of filler - not many can pull that off.

Sigur Rós - Takk...

2005; 10 tracks

This album is one of the reasons I am alive. The tracks "Gong" and "Gong Endir" are my absolute favorites. They have released a few nice things, but I personally love this Sigur Rós album the most.

Sigur Rós is an Icelandic ambient group, but with guitars and various instruments their sound is highly experimental. On Takk, you will hear much gentler tracks and even some acoustic too. The high-pitched and unusual vocals may take some getting used to, but all in all... there really isn't much to dislike about them. This is such a shimmering, magical album - please try this and tell me what you think, if you haven't heard this before.

Jesu - Heart Ache EP

2004; 2 tracks

This is Justin Broadrick's first album under the name Jesu, a drone/sludge project where he does all of the instruments himself.

Heart Ache's two 20 minute tracks contain moments of pure, crushing glory, and some of the most beautiful transitions and melodies one will ever hear. That is all I feel I should say, really, because this is undoubtedly Jesu's best release.

God is an Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright

2005; 11 tracks

In honor of the birthday of my friend, Danny (Master_ov_Khaos), here is one of the most amazing albums in the universe and the first that we -both- liked a lot... I think. The track "Forever Lost" will always be our favorite song. :3

This is the second, and by far the greatest, album of the post-rock trio from Ireland, God is an Astronaut. This album is inundated with extremely melodic, powerful riffs and ideas. All is Violent, All is Bright is unlike other post-rock albums because it's concept is truly portrayed through music, each song mounting upon the other until the whole can be appreciated as a masterpiece of post-rock.

It might not be post-rock in the sense GY!BE is, but it's much more thought-out, musical, and pleasing than some of the stuff that passes as "post-rock" these days.

2010; 4 tracks

I can't stop listening to this aaaalbum by French post-rock/metal group Year of No Light. They play some of the most amazing post-rock/whatever I've ever heard, it is so fantastically heavy and strong. The first and last tracks are the best.

The Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters

2007; 9 tracks

God fucking damn. This album. It is beyond words. The Twilight Sad is a post-rock/indie group from Scotland, and this is their debut album. I've never really heard any Scottish music before, let alone Scottish vocals.. it was a bit of a shock at first, but this music is so saturated with beauty I fell instantly in love. It transcends the tag of 'post-rock.'

Songs of Green Pheasant - Gyllyng Street

2007; 7 tracks

This soft, beautiful, perfect album by Songs of Green Pheasant, aka Duncan Sumpner, literally makes me feel at home. His style is likened to those of Devendra Banhart, Múm, and Vetiver, among others... There is such a comfort in the gentle melodies here, the whale-like sounds of the ocean and unearthly picturesque scenes full of sights and smells reminiscent of the woods.. His soft, luxurious vocals add to the whispy atmosphere. Breezy, dream-like and enchanting music emanates from Little Hours. Highly recommended. "A Sketch For Maenporth" is definitely a highlighting track for me - it is exactly the kind of ambience I've been looking for in such a long time.

Bästard - Radiant, Discharged, Crossed-Off

1996; 10 tracks

Bästard is a French experimental/post-rock group that needs more recognition because this album is really great.

If you like Slint, Three Mile Pilot, or Enablers, make sure you listen to this. Vocals occasionally appear, but this album spends most of it's time experimenting with instrumental post-rock textures. I can't recommend this enough, just give it a shot b/c IT'S REALLY GOOD. ^ Not my description but it works pretty well.

Ef - I Am Responsible

2008; 6 tracks

This is Ef's 2nd full-length album, and, personally, their best. I Am Responsible is 6 tracks of post-rock perfection, of heartbreaking tenderness, and of achingly beautiful climaxes. I am not the hugest post-rock fan, but this album is really one of my favorites in the genre...

My favorite track is "Bear," but I also really love "Thrills." "Bear" is a melancholy masterpiece, and I love listening to it over and over again. I once listened to it sitting on a rock near the lake during a family get together, and it started raining. My childhood cat, my best friend, had died only a few days before, and I laid out and watched the sky with an empty head. I didn't know what to think about. I didn't have anything left. I didn't want it to be silent, so I put on music, whatever music I had. I had just gotten this album the day before and decided to listen to it right then and there... and I was frozen the entire 58 minutes it ran. I couldn't believe anything could possibly be so beautiful. I especially loved "Bear"... I remember hearing that song for the first time and seeing the sky and thinking of Death in June's words: The golden, golden copper sun / old, eldest, dead / over a blue milky-sea sky...

Thränenkind - Eine Momentaufnahme - Der Rest ist nur Einsamkeit

2008; 5 tracks

This is Thränenkind's debut demo, (Self-released), and it's really great. It's post-rock influenced black metal from Germany, with depressive/suicidal tendencies. There are many soft parts and many Gris-like parts, which make this a very interesting demo for sure.

"The sound of Thranenkind is that of most Post-Black Metal bands, droning, repetitive guitar lines interspersed with short interludes of atmospheric clean strummed guitar. While the band does nothing new in terms of style, the two members of the group Nathaneal (guitars/bass/vocals) and Pesten (drums) obviously have great skills in terms of song-writing, with Eine Momentaufnahme - Der Rest ist nur Einsamkeit clearly being a highlight album in the burgeoning Post-Rock influenced sect of Black Metal.

Another great aspect of the album is the contrast between songs with a depressive atmosphere and songs with a joyous atmosphere, giving the album great variety. One can only be doing themselves a favor by this acquiring this excellent demo and start following the progress of Black Metal's soon to be most prolific band."

That's a pretty dumb review, but I think it gives a good introduction to what this band's about. Thränenkind's demo is awesome.
